Niles Canyon Railway, Sunol, CA: May 22, 2011

On Sunday May 22, 2011 eight LCOC Western Region members gathered at the Sunol Depot for a train excursion on the Niles Canyon Railway and lunch. Bob and Joan MacDougal traveled from Carson City, Chris Hunter and wife Julie cruised down from the Napa Valley, Jeremy Sanford arrived from Sacramento, Joe Belluomini from Roseville, Warren Lubich from San Francisco, and the ever gregarious Mike Cunningham from Marin. Warren drove his daily-driver black '61 Continental sedan, and Mike drove his '92 Mark VII LSC. Members enjoyed a rather leisurely trip down the canyon on antique rolling stock to Niles where they boarded a restored 1958 GM transit bus for the short trip to Niles' main street. A delicious lunch was had a Bronco Billy's Pizza Palace before members scrambled back to the return train (fortunately trains never leave on time). All agreed that Niles was a delightful little town with numerous antique stores that deserved exploring. The antique rail cars creaked back up the canyon and the day was at an end.
