Jim Ayres and his ’64 Continental Share the Fun at KTLA TV’s Summer Movie Preview

KTLA TV broadcast its annual summer movie preview during its early morning news programs April 26 and LCOC’s own Jim Ayres was there to share in the fun. Though it meant an extraordinarily early 3 a.m. wakeup call Jim was able to get his convertible in gear and motor from Costa Mesa up to Hollywood in time for the show. The opportunity to participate came up as a result of his work on the Huntington Beach Concours Committee and Jim took advantage of the invitation.

The news event was hosted by KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin and several other KTLA personalities. The outdoor event is a throwback to the drive-in movie scene popular in the 1950s and ‘60s. Previews of this season’s summer movies were projected onto a large screen and cars of the period—primarily convertibles—were lined up in front as they might have been at a real drive-in movie when they were new.

Rubin interviewed personalities from the films while sitting parade-style atop the rear-seat package trays of the convertibles. Jim’s Lincoln was shown frequently and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Adding to the ambiance were real mini-skirted roller skating carhops from Frisco Carhop Dining and Catering of City of Industry who zipped in between the cars throughout the telecasts. Frisco also catered the event with some yummy barbecue fare along with donuts from Donut Princess Los Angeles and beverages from Try My Tea.
KTLA also promoted one of LCOC’s upcoming events, the Huntington Beach Concours, which will feature hot rods and customs on June 2 and classics and collectible cars on June 3 all at the Huntington Beach Central Park.
