HB Concours Evolves from June Gloom to Fun in the Sun

Early a.m. June gloom clouds gave way to brilliant sunshine as LCOC members helped celebrate the 36th renewal of the Huntington Beach Concours on June 5. Six members with Lincolns in the recent LCOC Western National Meet were entered in the HB show. In addition, several other LCOC members joined in the fun with other makes.

The annual HB event has been a favorite of LCOC for years, combining the comforting familiar with new wrinkles each time. For 2022 our usual parking area was replaced with a new location in the center of the field opposite some elegant Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. Moving to the “high rent” neighborhood may have had its benefits, as at least 4 of our entries received awards. Class winners included Jim Ayres with his 1988 Mark VII, Halsey Posadas with his 1972 Mark IV and Elayne Bendel with her 1964 Continental convertible. Don Torrence received a 2nd place award for his 1970 Mark III. No wonder Halsey, Elayne and Don are smiling in the photo below!

As all collectible car owners know, dedication is the hallmark of everyone who engages in our hobby. Getting up at crazy hours can be one result.

Our thanks to Ron Cressy who trundled in from Yucca Valley in the early a.m. for the photo at left of San Jacinto at sunrise (around 5:15 a.m.) taken from inside his 1988 Town Car. Ron also was kind enough to bring extra chairs and snacks to share. What a guy!

Vintage motorcylces, sports cars, American muscle, 20th Century classics, electric trains, vendor booths and entertainment all were part of the show. Even an old fire truck was on view.

Despite a very busy show weekend with other competing events the HB Concours proved very popular with spectators. Though many of the car owners are from the Medicare crowd, younger families and small children seem to enjoy the cars just as much. Nothing beats putting a child in the driver’s seat and seeing their million dollar smile! Even we are not immune, as Elayne eagerly jumped behind the wheel of a gorgeous 1949 Bentley convertible for a photo!

Our thanks to organizer Barth McGrath and his entire concours committee, Mother’s car care products and the other sponsors, grand marshal Dave Kunz from KABC, vocalist Aprile Deanne, all the judges and every car owner for their hard work and participation.

We wish all our members could have been there. See below for a sampling of what you missed.
